Leading the Way to Better Health

More than four years ago, Mid Coast Health Services reached out to the community for input on the changing needs of healthcare in our region. The outcome of this process unveiled the Mid Coast Health 2020 Vision, an integrated plan to transform healthcare. Soon after, Mid Coast declared its pursuit of the Triple Aim, a concept that addresses three main focus areas to improve the state of healthcare: improving patient experience, improving population health, and reducing costs. While the Vision incorporates all of the components of the Triple Aim, the biggest commonality is a greater emphasis on wellness and prevention.

While community health has recently become a strategic focus for Mid Coast, it has long been part of the organization’s history. Founded in 1996 as Healthline, Mid Coast Hospital's community health improvement program began by building community partnerships to offer quality health education on a variety of topics. Guided by the 2020 Vision and newly established organizational goals, Healthline recently evolved into the new Mid Coast Center for Community Health and Wellness.

"As an organization that has been promoting prevention and wellness for the last decade, we see this as a vital component of a more efficient healthcare system,” said Cate Parker, Mid Coast’s Community Health and Wellness Coordinator. "Our new Center will focus on broadening the scope of offerings, seeking to provide everyone in our community the tools they need to stay or become healthy.”

The new Mid Coast Center for Community Health and Wellness provides quality, evidence-based wellness programs and resources through classes, clinical care, workshops, support groups, literature, and online resources. Programs offered include cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, adult and children’s health, outpatient nutrition, weight loss, tobacco cessation, and asthma education, with new programs set to launch later this fall.

Along with a renewed focus on community health, Mid Coast also unveiled a new website at midcoasthealth.com/wellness. The new site features a variety of health topics with details of what programs are offered to meet a particular health need within the community. Additionally, there is an extensive listing of classes, support groups, and screenings that are available to the public. While most of the offerings are available free, others may be covered by insurance with a referral from a primary care physician.

"The greatest part about the Mid Coast Center for Community Health and Wellness is the collaboration and integration with other community programs and healthcare providers. Every year, we take part in a community health needs assessment to determine where the gaps are. Through our existing partnerships and comprehensive medical group, we can join forces to ensure that those needs are addressed,” said Parker.

Through its long-term commitment to prevention and newly reestablished focus on expanding wellness offerings, Mid Coast remains well positioned to lead the community to better health.
