Expanded Offerings Highlight of Healthy Café

A year since committing to provide healthier options, the Healthy Café at Mid Coast has become a place to turn for a variety of eating options. It is widely known in the area for nutritious and delicious meals at affordable prices.

Each day the Café menu is carefully crafted to offer a balance of past favorites along with new healthy foods, creating a full menu of options to please any palate. The most notable addition to the Café offerings is the daily "Wellness Meal,” a bundled deal that offers a low-cost, balanced meal made with fresh ingredients. Popular Wellness Meals include Baked Crumb-Coated Chicken with Roasted Lemon Garlic Brussels Sprouts and Quinoa Cakes with Tomato and Ginger Chutney.

As part of the commitment to the Healthy Hospital Food Initiative, the Café has also increased the availability of locally grown produce and vegetarian options. The salad bar now features greens from Olivia’s Garden (New Gloucester) and tomatoes from Backyard Farms (Madison), while local seafood is purchased from Plant’s Seafood (Bath). Vegetarian selections are provided daily, often one of the two homemade soups, and vegetarian burgers are always offered alongside turkey and lean ground beef.

With the support of 40 volunteers who contribute 150 hours per week, the Café staff has been working diligently to find the right balance of healthy offerings. The goal is to expand offerings and introduce a variety of new and inviting foods, while also accommodating the needs and requests of employees, patients, and families.
