Delivering a Healthy Start for Mother and Baby

When expecting a baby, today’s woman has many options for high quality pre-natal and maternity care. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of Mid Coast Medical Group-Women’s Health Care and Mid Coast Hospital Maternity Care, Mid Coast sets the standard for high level, compassionate care for new families in the Midcoast region.

Women’s Choice Award®

In January 2015, Mid Coast Hospital received a Women’s Choice Award® for being one of America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics. This evidence-based designation identifies the country’s best healthcare institutions based on their exceptional scores for patient recommendation, as provided by data reported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) surveys, as well as an analysis that weighs criteria identified as the most important to women.

With a focus on patient satisfaction, Mid Coast Hospital offers women and families a host of options for care before, during, and after birth. The Mid Coast Medical Group-Women’s Health Care team includes six board certified OB/GYN physicians and five certified nurse midwives (CNMs), collaborating to offer a full range of maternity care options to meet the needs and desires of every family.

Families looking for a home-like birth experience may prefer one of the CNMs for their care. In the hospital setting CNMs provide 24/7 care, just as the physicians do. CNMs work tirelessly to ensure women have every amenity available to make their birth experience as personal as possible, while also knowing that a full array of maternity services—including fetal monitoring, lab, anesthesiology, and physicians—are immediately available if needed.

CenteringPregnancy Program

In 2010, Mid Coast began offering CenteringPregnancy, an evidence-based model of group prenatal care that integrates basic prenatal health assessment and education with social support. The Centering program allows women with similar "due months” to meet in a group setting, participate in their own care, and create supportive relationships that last far beyond the birth of their children. Having recently been awarded a grant from the March of Dimes, the Centering program at Mid Coast has expanded, now offering ongoing classes throughout the year.

Since its inception, CenteringPregnancy has contributed to the excellent health outcomes that Mid Coast Maternity Care is known for, ultimately contributing to lower pre-term and cesarean section birth rates. Additionally, Mid Coast providers promote "Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait,” a comprehensive March of Dimes initiative to encourage healthy, full-term births. March of Dimes reported in November 2014 that Maine hospitals have seen a decrease in early elective deliveries, making it one of only five states in the nation to earn an "A” on the March of Dimes Premature Birth Report Card that compares each state’s pre-term birth rate.

Comprehensive Services

Delivering more than 600 babies each year, Mid Coast Hospital provides a modern family-centered birthing facility with 11 private LDRP (labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum) rooms and overnight accommodations for support persons. The hospital offers a full range of resources and support to help prepare for the new baby including free tobacco cessation counseling, home visiting education programs, and maternity education classes specifically designed for first-time fathers and siblings.

Mid Coast Hospital has also been recognized for excellence in breastfeeding education and lactation care, boasting an 89% breastfeeding initiation rate for new mothers. This success is attributed to the hard work of seven board-certified lactation consultants, available to new families prior to birth, while in the hospital, and for ongoing support by phone or in person. Lactation Services is a vital part of the care team for new and growing families, working diligently to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding.

Whether choosing physician or midwifery care, individual or group prenatal care, breast or bottle feeding, Mid Coast Hospital Maternity care and the providers of Mid Coast Medical Group-Women’s Health Care are available to support new families with their decisions, helping them enjoy the precious moments of birth and ensuring a healthy start for mother and baby.
