Quilts Make a Difference

Eugene W., a 102-year-old WW II veteran and Mid Coast Hospital patient, receives a quilt made by the Kaleidoscope Quilters from Kirsten Skorpen, LMSW.

Mid Coast Palliative Care, a department of Mid Coast Hospital, provides care to patients with serious illnesses. Quilt donations from community members, such as those from local groups Kaleidoscope Quilters and Ocean Wave Quilters, also help to cheer patients and their loved ones.

Both Kaleidoscope Quilters and Ocean Wave Quilters are chapters of the statewide organization Pine Tree Quilters Guild Inc., and have been creating and donating quilts to Mid Coast Hospital for many years.

Margaret Gardiner, FNP, of Mid Coast Palliative Care, and her Mid Coast colleague Kirsten Skorpen, LMSW, first got the idea to seek quilt donations after reading a New York Times article that discussed a dying man who received a donated quilt, which he said was like receiving “loving energy.”

Since then, numerous Mid Coast patients have received donated quilts. Margaret said quilters try to match the theme of each quilt to the patient’s interests and life events. A personalized quilt is especially treasured by a patient’s family and loved ones, as it can be passed down as a keepsake after a patient dies.
