Outdoor Visits with Loved Ones

Outdoor Visits at Mid Coast Senior Health

In June, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention released new guidelines allowing outdoor visitation with patients and residents at senior health communities. Following extensive guidelines to ensure patient and resident safety, the Mid Coast Senior Health team quickly moved to have all safety measures and logistics in place to allow these visits to occur.

On June 19, Mid Coast Senior Health became one of the first skilled, long-term, and assisted living facilities in Maine to offer outdoor visitation for residents and patients, offering multiple 30-minute visiting sessions, three days per week. Visitors were required to schedule visits ahead of time and upon arrival were screened for COVID-19. Both tasks required additional staffing to ensure these safety protocols were enforced.

To date, Mid Coast Senior Health has scheduled and accommodated 542 outside visits for 86 individual residents and patients. During these unprecedented times, these visits proved to be invaluable for both patients and residents to spend time with their loved ones. The visits were also comforting to staff who are committed to providing compassionate care to individuals and their families every day.

With the looming cold weather season putting an end to outdoor visitation, it was announced September 30 that visits could move indoors with adherence to the strictest safety measures including masking, social distancing, and sanitization protocols for all visitors and staff. With less orchestration and setup required for the indoor visiting area, Mid Coast Senior Health was able to increase the number of visiting sessions each week.

We know that visitation is an essential part of healthy living and the healing environment, and we are grateful for the hard work of the Senior Health team to put this in place for our patients and residents.
