Exploring Integration with MaineHealth

Lois Skillings, President and CEO of Mid Coast–Parkview Health, presents to community members at Patten Free Library in Bath on March 19.

Over the course of the next several months, Mid Coast–Parkview Health will be exploring the possibility of integrating into the MaineHealth system. On February 19, 2019, the Mid Coast–Parkview Health board of directors voted for the initiative in an effort to create efficiencies and enhance the overall quality of care and services provided in the Midcoast region. A board exploratory committee has been formed, and will evaluate the integration over a four- to six-month process, which will include comprehensive community and stakeholder engagement.

The exploratory committee will determine if joining MaineHealth could better serve the long-term needs of our community. Committee members will examine whether the collaboration would ensure continued clinical excellence, integrated services, shared technology, and the more effective use of resources at the local level.

One of the catalysts for this consideration is the uncertainty of the nation’s healthcare system, and the challenge it poses for community hospitals such as ours. Shifting government policies, increased regulation, growth in uncompensated care, and rapid technology advancements are all examples of how integrating with a larger system like MaineHealth could improve the quality of our care and services.

Though the entire Mid Coast–Parkview Health system remains financially secure and clinically strong today, forming a more integrated relationship with MaineHealth could act as a long-term strategy for navigating the complexities of modern-day healthcare while enhancing the delivery of clinical care.

As part of the exploratory process, Mid Coast–Parkview Health engaged with employees, medical staff, corporators, volunteers, Auxilians, patients, donors, and community members to gather input regarding what is important to preserve within the local healthcare culture.

To garner public opinion more comprehensively, throughout the month of March, Mid Coast–Parkview Health held multiple public forums in Brunswick, Harpswell, Bath, and Topsham.
