Mid Coast–Parkview Health has begun work on an extensive renovation and expansion project at its senior health facility, Mid Coast Senior Health. Mid Coast–Parkview Health leaders, donors, staff, and residents gathered at the construction site, 58 Baribeau Drive, on Tuesday, May 21 to break ground and usher in the new era in local senior healthcare. The project is expected to be complete by early June 2020.
"With Maine’s rapidly aging population, Mid Coast–Parkview Health recognizes the importance of providing specialized care options for seniors," said Randee Reynolds, Mid Coast–Parkview Health Vice President of Community Health. "The renovation of Mid Coast Senior Health, while an exciting endeavor for our organization, is also a pathway to ensuring our community has access to the highest quality, most modern, and comprehensive elder care available."
The new construction was made possible through the success of Our Commitment, Your Health, Mid Coast–Parkview Health’s first capital campaign in 20 years. In addition to the planned updates to Mid Coast Senior Health, proceeds from the accumulating $7.6 million fundraising effort were used to support the expansion of Cancer Care and Community Health & Wellness initiatives at Mid Coast Hospital’s Parkview Campus which were completed in June 2018. Mid Coast–Parkview Health Chair of the Board Sandy Morrell Rooney and former Board Member Dugan Shipway co-chaired the campaign.
"On behalf of Mid Coast–Parkview Health’s Board of Directors, we couldn’t be more pleased with the outpouring of support from our greater Brunswick community, including residents from Thornton Oaks, Highland Green, and Botany Place among others," said Morrell Rooney.
Shipway added, "The Capital Campaign Cabinet has been hard at work for a few years to achieve this goal. With them, I would like to thank our incredibly generous donors. Without them, the milestone we are celebrating today would not be possible."
Over the course of the next several months, Langford & Low Construction will be building a new 7,000-square foot wing at Mid Coast Senior Health, as well as completing a 9,000-square foot renovation to the Nursing and Rehabilitation at Bodwell and Long-term Care at Mere Point communities. The project was designed by Portsmouth, NH-based architectural firm, JSA, Inc.
The first phase of the renovation included running new electrical lines through the facility, as well as renovating the bathing areas in the long-term care and rehabilitation communities. Renovation of dining and living areas in long-term care will follow.
The expansion phase is now underway, and residents are expected to move into the new wing early 2020. The final phase will be to renovate the existing long-term and rehabilitation wings, followed by the nurses station and communal space.
When the expansion and renovation is complete, Mid Coast Senior Health’s long-term care and rehabilitation residents will enjoy the most modern, state-of-the-art amenities available, including a refurbished kitchen, dining area, activities area, and living units.
Additionally, the renovation will include converting Mere Point long-term care and Bodwell rehabilitation communities to all private rooms, allowing for maximum patient privacy and comfort. Single rooms will also improve patient experience through providing more space for physical and occupational therapy sessions and enhanced quality measures.
In addition to a large, private bathroom, each single room will also include a welcoming entry space, a natural light-infused environment, and the capacity to be converted to a hospice room if necessary.
Expanding hospice care services will also be a key component of the project. An enhanced environment for hospice care including dedicated family, kitchen, and gathering spaces will provide respite for family and loved ones. Additionally, more extensive inpatient hospice services will help keep patients comfortable at a time when peace, comfort, and dignity are most crucial.

In addition to Rehabilitation at Bodwell and Long-Term Care at Mere Point, Mid Coast Senior Health also offers Assisted Living at Thornton Hall and Memory Care at The Garden.
