Personal Wellness Stories - Darlene C.

Darlene Chalmers
Former Vice President of Elder Care and Home Care Services

As the Vice President of Elder Care and Home Care Services at Mid Coast–Parkview Health, I know that I cannot give back and care for others unless I care for myself first. The answer to what drives me to stay healthy is simple… I want to stay healthy so I can do what I love to do. Being healthy allows me to enjoy my life more.

I began running in my twenties. When I became a parent, I wanted to be a role model for my daughters. When they were young, I got creative on how to fit in activity, I would do a stair climbing session at home in attempt to burn a few calories. When the girls got older, I would run as they rode their bikes and dance with them to Madonna and Michael Jackson!

Being active has also helped me to maintain my weight over the years. As I learned to take ownership of my own health, I discovered that the things that make me healthy are the things I enjoy the most. These days, I go to the gym 5 days a week and attend the 5:30 a.m. group exercise class. I mix up the classes to get variety and to protect my joints. I also run on the weekends and often go kayaking, golfing, skiing, and biking as well.

My daughters, Jessie and Jodie, and I spend mother-daughter time doing a spin class and yoga together. They have followed in my footsteps and understand that having an exercise and healthy eating pattern increases stamina and energy and leads to a longer, healthier, more fulfilled life. For that, I am grateful!
